Best Places for Ice Fishing

Near Superior Stay Hotel

Ice fishing can be as simple as piercing a hole in the ice and dropping in a line while resting on an overflowing bucket. Or it can be an all-day outing. Either way, frozen waters allow fishers to reach the far edges of lakes that would be difficult to get during the summers.

Season and Fishing Tips

Ice fishing starts in December through March though some lakes in the Upper Peninsula can last until May. Use tip-ups or slip bobbers when ice fishing for walleye during midday and jigs like Jigging Rapalas are quite effective for fishing through the ice during low-light periods. Also try using a slip-bobber and suspending minnows to entice walleye. When searching for brown and rainbow trout, cast in areas of the frozen lake with shallower depths and use baits like live smelt.
