Best Places for Kayaking in Marquette & Munising

Presque Isle

Trip time: Approximately 2 hours

Price tag: $59 per guest

Presque Isle, located in Marquette, MI, is the most iconic city park in the Upper Peninsula. Nearly an island, Presque Isle juts into Lake Superior on the northern edge of the city. This trip is 3-4 miles roundtrip. Highlights include the popular Blackrocks formation, small sea caves, cliffs, and views of the Marquette shoreline.

Grand Island – Flat Rock

Trip time: Approximately 4-5 hours

Price tag: $109 per guest

Our “Classic” expedition. Our most popular GI trip rounds out at eight miles. From the East Channel lighthouse to the picturesque sandstone cliffs, this trip offers awe-inducing sights along the “Thumb” of Grand Island. The location of this route might also protect paddlers from some of the wind and waves of Lake Superior.

Grand Island – Mather Beach

Trip time: Approximately 4-5 hours

Price tag: $109 per guest

Our “Open Seas” expedition. This is our longest day trip, rounding out at 9 miles. Paddling along the Western shore of Grand Island will allow our guests to explore sandstone cliffs and beaches in solitude. This trip is best for seasoned kayakers or those who seek a remote wilderness experience.

Grand Island – Overnight

Trip time: 2 – 5 days

Price tag: Varies according to trip length and group size. Please contact us for pricing.

This trip is for those wishing to explore some of the most iconic sights of Grand Island and is commonly a circumnavigation of the entire island. Highlights include 200ft cliff faces, sea caves, and cliff jumping.

What to wear while Kayaking?

  • Our best advice: Layer! Lake Superior has a cooling effect on this area of the UP, so we tend to experience lower temperatures with a cool breeze out on the water. That said, we also have a few warm spells every summer with highs in the 80s and even 90s. The best way to prepare for a typical day is to wear a warm layer (softshell, fleece, spring jacket, etc) in the morning with a lighter layer (tank top, sun shirt, etc) underneath for later in the day. Most people warm up quickly when they start paddling and are ready to shed their jackets well before lunch.
  • Pants or shorts are both acceptable. However, we recommend against wearing blue jeans or another cotton because it can be uncomfortable and cold if wet.
  • We try our best to keep your feet dry, but that isn’t always possible. Most of our clients prefer to wear some kind of water shoe or outdoor sandal (Chaco, Keen, Teva, etc). Some wear tennis shoes and take the chance they’ll get wet. It’s up to you!
