It is the second-best trail for a fall hike in Marquette after Sugarloaf. It's hard to find clear directions to hike this mountain because it sits in the middle of a dense trail network that makes it all too easy to take a wrong turn. Most hikers take the southern approach on M-550, the road that links Marquette and the small town of Big Bay, then drive three or four miles to the Wetmore Pond parking area and take the trail that starts on the northwest end of the parking lot. Unlike nearby Sugarloaf Mountain, Hogback Mountain offers hikers a series of narrow, twisty trails through woodlands, rock fields, and swampy areas. The view is worth it, though. The rocky summit is one of the best locations for hiking which rewards hikers for viewing beautiful fall foliage and endless vast and blue superior lake. If the sky is clear, you can see the mountains of the Keweenaw Peninsula to the northwest.
